Morning sickness, real life experiences:

Priya works as an architect in Calicut and is a mother to two healthy kids. She experienced morning sickness throughout her pregnancy period. Priya describes the experience of having morning sickness like that of a hangover. She threw up every time she ate something. There were instances during her pregnancy when she had to rush back home on her way to work because she threw up on herself. She describes that feeling as something restless going on in the stomach. However, she was lucky to have a husband who was so supportive of her during this time.

Priya says, “My pregnancy journey was not a beautiful one, like in the movies. Each time I threw up I also peed. Those were the longest nine months I could ever think of. Extremely uncomfortable and too unpleasant. But looking back, I must say it was worth the experience.”

What is Morning Sickness?

Morning sickness typically begins around the 6th week of pregnancy peaking around the ninth week. If one is lucky morning sickness often subsides by the end of the first trimester. For some pregnant women morning sickness can extend beyond and vary intensely. Symptoms range from mild nausea to severe vomiting affecting daily life and wellbeing. Though named as morning sickness, this can occur at any time during the day.  When it becomes severe it is known as Hyperemesis Gravidarum. At this time it’s crucial to seek medical advice due to the risk of dehydration and weight loss.

What causes Morning Sickness?

Ayurveda views morning sickness as an imbalance in the body’s natural energies or doshas particularly Vata (air and space) and Pita (fire and water). Emotional factors, diet and stress can exacerbate the imbalances during pregnancy leading to increased nausea and discomfort.

Morning sickness is thought to be caused on account of high levels of hormones in the body which include estrogen. It could also occur on account of changes in the physical and chemical constitution of the body that pregnancy brings about. The HCG hormone (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin), which is at its highest during pregnancy, is also a cause for morning sickness. Morning sickness can also occur because it runs in the family.

Janika Ayurveda’s tips for managing Morning Sickness during pregnancy:

  1. Dietary Adjustments: Women with morning sickness are advised to hope for light, easily digestible foods. Foods that are easy on the stomach and nutritious can make a world of difference. Ayurveda recommends foods that are sweet, sour, and salty to balance Vata and Pita. Include rice, lentils, and fresh fruits in your diet. Incorporate foods rich in vitamin B6 such as bananas, nuts, and lean meats, known to help with nausea. Avoid overly spicy, fried, or dry foods that can aggravate nausea. Make sure to include more proteins in your diet.
  2. Small, frequent meals: Eating small portions frequently can prevent an empty stomach, which is one of the key triggers for morning sickness.
  3. Stay hydrated: Hydration is key. Consider coconut water or herbal tea to keep nausea at bay while ensuring you and your baby remain hydrated.
  4. Herbal Remedies: Ginger is a revered herb in Ayurveda for its anti-nausea properties. A small piece of Ginger with a teaspoon of honey or ginger tea can be soothing. Other options like mint, lemon, and cardamom are also beneficial.
  5. Coconut Milk: Coconut milk can be used in preparations as it is known to reduce acidity and thereby the symptoms of morning sickness.
  6. Lime Juice: Take a sip of fresh lime juice with sugar and salt to reduce the frequency of morning sickness.
  7. Pranayama: Shitali Pranayama can help reduce Pita dosha in the body. It is known to promote digestion and also cool the body.

Will morning sickness affect the baby?

A concern for many expectant mothers is the impact of morning sickness on their unborn child. Generally mild to moderate morning sickness has no adverse effects on the baby. However, severe morning sickness or Hyperemesis Gravidarum  which can lead to dehydration and weight loss, may require medical attention to ensure both you and your baby’s well being. It is important to consult with health care professionals if you are unable to keep food down or experience significant weight loss. Rest assured, with proper care, monitoring and treatment, the risk to your baby can be minimized.
