A mother is connected to her newborn baby through the umbilical cord or the naval cord. This is the only source through which the babies will receive nutrition in the womb. As the baby enters into the outside world, this cord is clamped and cut close to the baby’s body, leaving a small portion. The leftover portion is what we all call the umbilical stump, which will fall out within 7 to 10 days.in some, it will take up to 14 days also. During the process, the stump will change from bluish-white to black as it dries, and it eventually falls. This is the time to start the massage using Shishu Tailam, cold compressed virgin coconut oil, which nourishes and moisturizes the baby’s skin.
But at the same time, we need to give care and attention to the umbilical stump so the process of stump fall will be smooth and devoid of any infections.
The new mothers should always keep the stump clean using only plain water if it is dry/sticky and make sure to keep it dry. Exposure to air helps it to dry out the base of the stump. Make sure to keep the diaper away from the stump, as it helps to prevent contact with urine.
The major mistake the new moms do is bathing the baby in a tub or sink before the stump has fallen off. It is always best to do a sponge bath till the stump has fallen. Don’t put pressure on the stump or try to pull off the stump.
Infections or bleeding are rare, but keep an eye on these points and it will be the best time to contact your doctor if the baby cries when you touch the cord or skin near to it or the skin around is red and swollen or if any foul smell or pus discharge.
