The role of hCG in pregnancy

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy. It plays a vital role in supporting fetal development and helps support the uterine lining. hCG levels rise after conception and continue to rise until about ten weeks in pregnancy. Pregnancy care providers closely monitor hCG levels to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

hCG in pregnancy

How is hCG produced?

After conception, a fertilized egg travels through the fallopian tubes to the uterus. The fertilized embryo implants into the uterine wall, triggering the placenta to form. The placenta begins producing and releasing hCG into the blood and urine. hCG can be found in a person’s blood around 11 days after conception and takes slightly longer to register on urine tests.

What is the function of hCG?

Once the placenta begins making hCG, it triggers the body to create more estrogen and progesterone. Together with the hCG hormone, these hormones help thicken the uterine lining and tell the body to stop menstruating or releasing eggs. The correct balance of these three hormones sustains and supports the pregnancy.

What are the normal hCG levels during pregnancy?

hCG levels rise rapidly during the first trimester and then decline slightly. The expected hCG ranges in pregnant women are based on the length of pregnancy. Here are the expected hCG ranges for each week of pregnancy:

  • 3 weeks: 5 – 72 mIU/mL
  • 4 weeks: 10 -708 mIU/mL
  • 5 weeks: 217 – 8,245 mIU/mL
  • 6 weeks: 152 – 32,177 mIU/mL
  • 7 weeks: 4,059 – 153,767 mIU/mL
  • 8 weeks: 31,366 – 149,094 mIU/mL
  • 9 weeks: 59,109 – 135,901 mIU/mL
  • 10 weeks: 44,186 – 170,409 mIU/mL
  • 12 weeks: 27,107 – 201,165 mIU/mL
  • 14 weeks: 24,302 – 93,646 mIU/mL
  • 15 weeks: 12,540 – 69,747 mIU/mL
  • 16 weeks: 8,904 – 55,332 mIU/mL
  • 17 weeks: 8,240 – 51,793 mIU/mL
  • 18 weeks: 9,649 – 55,271 mIU/mL

What is the importance of hCG in pregnancy?

  • hCG helps prepare the uterine lining for implantation, creating a nurturing environment for the growing embryo.
  • hCG stimulates the production of hormones essential for maintaining pregnancy and supporting fetal growth.
  • hCG facilitates development of new blood vessels in the uterus ensuring a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients to the growing fetus.
  • hCG helps relax muscle cells in the uterine wall, preventing contractions that could disrupt the pregnancy.

Detecting pregnancy with hCG levels

A person may be familiar with hCG because it is a hormone that pregnancy tests check for in the urine. A home test can first detect hCG levels that indicate pregnancy about 1 to 2 weeks after conception. A doctor can also check for pregnancy by ordering a blood test to measure hCG levels.
